Reflexology is based on the principle that all areas and organs of your body are mapped onto your feet. Congestion or tension in a part of the foot may “mirror” congestion or tension in the corresponding body part.
What is Reflexology? Reflexology has been used as a successful treatment for many thousands of years. It was first practiced in India, China and Egypt where it was seen as a primary form of healing. Reflexology can be used on the feet and hands where your practitioner will correlate areas that feel blocked and tight with specific organs and systems in the body. A Reflexologist uses gentle pressure on the hands and feet. For each person the application and the effect of the therapy is unique. Sensitive, trained hands can detect tiny deposits and imbalances in the hands and feet, and by working on these points your Reflexologist can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the whole body. Tensions are eased, and circulation and elimination to organs and systems is improved.
Similar to acupressure principles, reflexology works with the body’s energy flow to stimulate self-healing and maintain balance in your physical body. The underlying theory behind reflexology is that there are “reflex” areas on the feet and hands that correspond to specific organs, glands, and other parts of the body.
the tips of the toes reflect the head
the heart and chest are around the ball of the foot
the liver, pancreas and kidney are in the arch of the foot
low back and intestines are towards the heel
Practitioners believe that applying pressure to these reflex areas can promote health in the corresponding organs through energetic pathways. The feet contain over 7000 nerve endings and over one quarter of the body’s bones. Our feet are also a great indicator of our toxicity levels, as toxins are stored in our lower extremities away from our major organs. Reflexology helps to break up toxins and encourages the body to release them.
Common Conditions Treated With Reflexology
Reflexology is used to reduce pain, increase relaxation, and stimulate circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids. It is fantastic in the treatment of:
Stress and Anxiety
It is especially useful in stress-related illness and emotional disorders. Reflexology is also convenient in cases where an area of the body is traumatized or diseased to the extent that direct manipulation is not appropriate.
